5 Newly Discovered Health Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish oil is one of the most important supplements you should be taking on a daily basis because of its “bang for your buck” in terms the many health and disease prevention benefits.

Here are five of the most recently discovered benefits:

Anti-Aging/Extends Lifespan.  Fish oil can slow (and even lengthen) telomeres on our DNA.  Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of our chromosomes (think of them as the plastic tips at the end of your shoe laces). Telomeres naturally shorten with age each time your cells divide. The protective caps will shorten faster as a consequence of poor diet, stress, environmental and household pollutants, and lack of fish oil in your diet.  According to this study, fish oil reduced telomere shortening which lowered the risk of chronic disease and increased lifespan.

Weight Loss.  A recent study of overweight or obese people with high blood pressure and high cholesterol found those taking fish oil along with exercise had an average weight loss of about 4.5 pounds and a decrease in overall body fat percentage after three weeks.

Increases Muscle Mass.  Women taking omega-3 fish oil supplements experienced a 20 percent increase in muscle mass compared to an 11 percent increase in muscle mass in women taking an olive oil (placebo) supplement.  Both groups of women participated in two 30-minute leg exercise sessions per week for 12 weeks.

Reduces Breast Cancer.  The omega-3 fats, DHA and EPA in fish is associated with a 14 to 32 percent reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer.  Researchers believe the cancer risk reduction is due to the fact that DHA kills cancer cells!

Prevents Brain Shrinkage.  Researchers recently found women with the highest intake of fish oil had the largest brain volumes. The highest level of fish oil intake was associated with a 0.7 percent greater brain volume and a 2.7 percent greater volume of the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a region of the brain associated with memory and is often the first area to suffer damage in Alzheimer’s disease.  The researchers also found people who consumed the most fish oil had brains that appeared one to two years younger than those who consumed less.
